2016 Cox Plate Betting Tips & Odds Update

October 20th, 2016

The Cox Plate 2016 betting markets for Saturday are all about Winx going back-to-back in the weight-for-age classic, but is the favourite the best Cox Plate tip to take to the bookies?

A class field of 10 is engaged for this spring’s edition of the $3 million Group 1 W.S. Cox Plate (2040m), the line-up dominated by Chris Waller’s defending champion Winx.

The darling of the Australian turf has won her past 12 starts on the trot including eight Group 1 victories to firmly stamp her as a champion.

Last year she beat a full Cox Plate field by nearly five lengths and she returns on Saturday looking to beat home her nine rivals and secure successive victories for the first time since So You Think (2009-10).

She only had two to defeat last start for the all-too-easy Group 1 Ladbrokes Caulfield Stakes (2000m) victory, a race that has produced more Cox Plate winners than any other lead-up since 1976.

Jumping from barrier three with Hugh Bowman aboard once more, Winx dominates the Cox Plate odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2 to salute for the punters.

So will Winx win the Cox Plate or is there an upset on the cards from the likes of the runaway Turnbull Stakes champion Hartnell ($3.50) or the filly in the mix Yankee Rose ($14)?

2016 Cox Plate Trifecta Tip: #8 Winx from #3 Hartnell and #10 Yankee Rose

1st: #8 Winx ($2)

It’s impossible not to get on the Winx bandwagon. She is too good for this Cox Plate field and after all she has done in the past 12 months, she still may not have peaked. She only ever does what she needs to and the Caulfield Stakes win was an easy gallop for her. She’s proven at the track, the distance and weight-for-age. True, Hartnell has never been at his best against her, but even so you’d think this mare has his measure.

2nd: #3 Hartnell ($3.50)

The John O’Shea-trained import finally faces off against Winx in peak form. The Turnbull Stakes winner easily accounted for his rivals in a Black Caviar like romp home at Flemington last start over the distance and ticks plenty of boxes. The one box he doesn’t tick is being able to stop a champion and he faces one very hard to beat champ here at a track that does him no favours.

3rd: #10 Yankee Rose ($14)

The fillies have won the Cox Plate just once back in 1976, and that won’t change this year. Yankee Rose however can finish in the money after her historic Spring Champion Stakes win over the boys at the Cox Plate distance in Sydney last time out. Her trainer David Vandyke is happy to run third and that’s likely what she’ll do from the inside alley on the 47.5kg lightweight.
