Winx is the 2015 Cox Plate Winner

October 24th, 2015

Classy mare Winx has completed an incredible performance at Moonee Valley this afternoon; producing a monumental turn of foot in the final straight to take out the featured 2015 Cox Plate (2040m) in an absolutely devastating display.

Winx continued to receive huge support from punters in the hours leading up to the 2015 Cox Plate, and did her chances of success no harm when jumping well and settling in prime position on the heels of early leaders The Cleaner, Arod and Highland Reel.

Receiving a good run in transit, jockey Hugh Bowman elected to push the Street Cry mare forward and take up the running rounding onto the final straight; Winx absolutely exploding forward and opening a near four length gap to win the 2015 Cox Plate from Criterion and Highland Reel.

Bowman delivered another typically brilliant performance aboard Winx to win the 2015 Cox Plate and was understandably elated to chalk up a maiden win in the feature race.

“When I was a little boy all I wanted to be was a jockey and to be here riding on this stage is one thing, but to win a race like this I can’t tell you what it means,” Bowman said after crossing the line.

“I’m so thankful obviously to Chris Waller and the connections of the horse but also my family and friends.

“I drew barrier 1 and I had a lot of confidence in the mare. I was a little bit worried coming down this side here because Highland Reel was staying one off and there was a lot of room between me and the leader which is not ideal.

“She’s a Group 1 mare, she’s a serious race horse and she adapted to the awkward position. From the 800m I was very confident but at the 600m when The Cleaner rolled off and I went through I didn’t want to be going that early.

“Sometimes you don’t have choices, you have to take the chances you get and I was on the premium mare that was able to capitalise on the run that I got.”

Chris Waller saddled his first Cox Plate winner in Winx this afternoon and rates the mare amongst the best horses he has trained.

“They’ve all been good moments but I’m starting to know now,”

“She’s fast and she just one a Cox Plate. She’s just a superior athlete and I’m not just saying that. She’s amazing.

“We’ve got a lot of good horses but I don’t ever dream of Cox Plates.

“I could see she was travelling pretty good and I quickly lost sight of the other two when I saw her coming through them and there was a lot of room on the rail, it wasn’t very crowded. It was terrific.”

Winx continued her undefeated run through the Spring Carnival in being crowned 2015 Cox Plate winner this afternoon having taken out each of the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) and Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) in her two starts prior.
