2015 Cox Plate Odds and Betting Update

A talented and capacity field of fourteen has been confirmed for Saturday’s featured 2015 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley; offering punters exceptional value from a betting perspective and several key opportunities to place a winning wager.

Highland Reel has contested a similar form line to 2014 Cox Plate champion Adelaide in the lead-up to Saturday’s feature and remains outright favourite at current Cox Plate odds of $5 with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au as a result.

Returning this year for sixth in the Group 1 Prix Le Parisien (1600m) on May 10th, Highland Reel progressed to second in the Group 1 Prix Du Jockey Club (2100m) and fifth in the Group 1 Irish Derby (2414m) before taking out each of the Group 3 Gordon Stakes (2414m) and Group 1 Secretariat Stakes (2012m) in succession.

Having since placed fifth amongst classy company in the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes (2012m), the Galileo entire will be very hard to beat in the Cox Plate from barrier 4, and with only 56kgs in tow.

Criterion has remained steady at $6.50 Cox Plate odds since the final field was confirmed on Tuesday and is now tied on the second line of betting with classy mare Winx, who has registered as clear market mover after cutting in from a $7.50 quote.

Criterion returned to racing this year for third in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m); progressing to a close second in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) before taking out the major Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) in April.

A trip abroad heralded several impressive results for the talented son of Sebring, who returned to Australian racing a fortnight ago for success in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m).

Michael Walker has retained the ride on Criterion, who should not have any issues performing to a high standard from barrier 7.

Winx returned to racing in autumn in slick form and is undefeated through her current preparation heading into the 2015 Cox Plate.

Taking a couple of runs to find form, Winx returned to the winner’s circle in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) on March 14th before placing fifth in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) and second in the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m).

Floating north in search of a maiden Group 1 title, the Street Cry mare jogged home to win the Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) before saluting in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m).

Running on late to win the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) first-up this time, Winx was far too good for her rivals when taking out the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) three weeks ago.

Kermadec ($8) and Arod ($8.50) interestingly figure as the only other runners currently available at Cox Plate odds of less-than $10, while Fawkner ($17), Hartnell ($16) and Happy Trails ($21) all offer exceptional value for money at their Cox Plate quotes.
