Adelaide is the 2014 Cox Plate Winner

October 25th, 2014

Classy international raider Adelaide has continued is incredible career start at Moonee Valley this afternoon, displaying a keen turn of foot to win the featured Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) from clear favourite Fawkner and Silent Achiever.

Jumping from the gates well, the Galileo colt settled in prime position within the pack, allowing early leaders The Cleaner, Almalad and Side Glance to set a noticeably quick tempo rounding onto the back straight.

Beginning to make his move partway up the back straight, Adelaide pushed out four wide without cover and quickly gathered momentum, sitting just three lengths off the pace upon arriving at the final straight.

Quickly spooling up, jockey Ryan Moore led the northern hemisphere three-year-old around the outside of his rivals; finding the fore of the pack with less-than 100m to run and maintaining position to find the line a short neck in the clear of Fawkner and a half-length ahead of a fast-finishing Silent Achiever.

Ryan Moore flew into Australia to partner Adelaide in the 2014 Cox Plate and was quick to lay the praise on the fortitude and staying abilities of his classy mount to win from a wide racing line.

“He’s a very good horse,” Moore said.

“He stepped out slowly and they went quick early on, I was a long way back and I just fought down that back and thought I had to creep closer and was giving away a bit of ground.

“He was creeping and I got onto the back of the filly (Royal Descent) and I thought she might bring me a bit further and she stopped, sort of got onto the back of Fawkner and he brought me in – he drifted me out a bit further but he’s a very good horse because he did it the hard way.

“I think he had quite a lot of support maybe because of his name, but it’s a marvellous atmosphere.

“I might be wrong but it’s probably the most important weight-for-age race in Australia and this horse has shown was a good colt he is.”

Connection for second-placed Fawkner, Nick Williams said that while always disappointing to lose a race, he was pleased with the Reset gelding’s run for a close second in the 2014 Cox Plate, particularly having stumbled leaving the barriers.

“He (Nick Hall, jockey) just said the horse stumbled coming out of the barriers and obviously gave him a scare for a second or so, but that’s no excuse for the horse – he ran to his absolute best and he was beaten by a better one on the day,” Williams said following the Cox Plate.

“We’ll see how he pulls up and take it from there but at the moment don’t worry about us, all credit with the winners.”

Adding a fourth win this afternoon to his impressive eight start career which has also heralded four minor places, Adelaide has now claimed two Group 1 victories over the distance, having taken out the Group 1 Secretariat Stakes (2011m) in the United States on August 16th.

Saddled by renowned Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien, Adelaide will remain in Australia under the care of trainer Chris Waller in preparation for a tilt at the major Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) during the closing stages of the 2015 Autumn Carnival.
