Dissident On Trial For Cox Plate In Caulfield Stakes

October 8th, 2014

Trainer Peter Moody has revealed that Dissident has to perform strongly in the Caulfield Stakes at Caulfield this weekend in order to be worthy of a place in the 2014 Cox Plate field.

Dissident started his 2014 Spring Racing Carnival campaign with a most impressive win in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 30 before he stamped himself as a genuine Cox Plate contender with a tough win over Fawkner in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on September 13.

The Sebring entire was narrowly denied a third straight Group 1 victory by Trust In A Gust in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on September 28, but will have the opportunity to return to winning form at the highest level in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) on Saturday.

There is a still a question mark over whether Dissident is capable of running the strong 2000 metres required to win the Caulfield Stakes or the Cox Plate, after he performed only fairly in his only previous start over 2000 metres in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) in the autumn, and Moody said that the four-year-old needs to perform strongly in the Caulfield Stakes on Saturday to give him the indication that he is capable of winning the Cox Plate.

“He has only had the one try in the Rosehill Guineas and it was on an unsuitable wet track, so I am treating this as his first 2000 metre run ever,” Moody told TVN yesterday.

“I am pleased with his progression and it is not a necessity for him to win, but it is a necessity for him to give me every indication that he is going to run it out a strong because I would think Saturday is going to be run stronger than a Cox Plate.

“If he doesn’t give us that indication on Saturday then we don’t need the tickets to the Cox Plate.”

Dissident has now recorded three wins as well as two placings at Group 1 level and now has an official rating figure that is the equal of almost any other horse in Australia, but Moody believes that the talented entire is still not getting the recognition that he deserves.

“He has been super at seven and he was strong though the line in the mile,” Moody said.

Fawkner looked like he had him three or four times in the Makybe, but he kept fighting and that is the qualities of this horse.

“He probably doesn’t get the accolades he deserves because of his racing style, but he has done everything asked of him.

“If we get a firm track here on Saturday I am sure that he will give his all again.”

Dissident is currently on the third line of 2014 Cox Plate betting markets at a quote of $7.50, while Sacred Falls ($5.50) remains a narrow favourite in the betting market with Ladbrokes.com.au.
