41 Remain After 2014 Cox Plate Third Acceptances

October 7th, 2014

The competition for a place in the 2014 Cox Platefield is set be extremely tough after 41 horses were included in the third acceptances for the Group 1 event that will be held at Moonee Valley on October 25.

One horse that is guaranteed a start in the 2014 Cox Plate is popular galloper The Cleaner, who will be chasing his fourth straight win when he has his next race start in the Australasian Weight-For-Age Championship.

The Cleaner started his winning streak when he took out the Jeep Don’t Hold Back Handicap (1600m) at Moonee Valley on August 2 before he guaranteed himself a start in the Cox Plate when he took out the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on September 6.

The Savorite Vivre gelding made the step-up to 2040 metres for the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) and he proved that his Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes winner was no fluke when he led from start to finish in the Group 3 event.

Australian Derby winner Criterion is another horse that is assured of a start in the Cox Plate and he was included in the first acceptances that were released this afternoon.

Criterion started his 2014 Spring Racing Carnival campaign with a tough third in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on August 23 and he finished a disappointing seventh in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at the same venue on September 6 before he returned to a semblance of his best form in the Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick on September 20.

Criterion will contest the Caulfield Stakes this weekend and the race is expected to be the key form guide for the Cox Plate after a number of leading Cox Plate contenders were included in the nominations for the race.

Bonfire, Crackerjack King, Dear Demi, Dissident, Fawkner, Foreteller, Happy Trails, Sacred Falls, Side Glance and Super Cool have all been included in the Cox Plate third acceptances and they will run in the Caulfield Stakes this weekend, while talented three-year-olds Almalad, Zululand, Chivalry, Looks Like The Cat, Kumaon, Merion, Go Indy Go and Sweynesse are all a chance of running in the Cox Plate after contesting Group 1 events this weekend.

Fawkner ($5.50) is currently favourite in the 2014 Cox Plate betting market with Ladbrokes.com.au from Sacred Falls ($6.50), Dissident ($7.50), Happy Trails ($8.50), Adelaide ($10) and Silent Achiever ($15).
