Cox Plate The Spring Target For Super Cool

August 15th, 2014

Trainer Mark Kavanagh has revealed that the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 25 will be the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival goal for Group 1 winner Super Cool.

Super Cool has not recorded a race win since his memorable victory in the 2013 Australian Cup.

Super Cool has not been seen at the races since he finished a credible ninth in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 5 last year, but he is set to make his racing return in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 30 after he impressed in a jump out at Flemington this morning.

The 2014 Cox Plate betting market is already available at leading online bookmaker Ladbrokes.com.au and Super Cool is available at odds of $21 to win the Australasian Weight-For-Age Championship.

Kavanagh believes that Super Cool will need a couple of runs to return to his best form, but he is happy with the condition of the son of Fastnet Rock heading into the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival and he hopes that the five-year-old will be peaking for the 2014 Cox Plate.

“I would be of the opinion that he’s a much better horse going into this spring than he was last year,” Kavanagh told Racing Victoria.

“It was our plan all along to give him the autumn off and get back and concentrate on this year’s spring.

“He hasn’t won since the Australian Cup when he was three, but those preparations took their toll and there’s no doubting his ability.

“He showed us that he doesn’t stay the 3200m and he showed us that he’s a 2000-metre horse and that’s what he’ll be specifically set for.

“When you’ll see him start to come right is about two weeks before the Cox Plate; he’ll run in the Cox Plate and then the Mackinnon.”

Super Cool made his racing debut with a green performance at Geelong in May of 2012 and he had just four race starts before stamping himself as a genuine Group 1 contender with a win in the Group 2 Mitchelton Wines Vase (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 27 and a second place finish in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500) at Flemington on November 3.

He started his autumn campaign with a third place finish in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on February 23 before returning to winning form with a win in the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) and his maiden Group 1 victory in the Australian Cup (2000m).

Super Cool was unable to record a race win during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, but he was placed in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m), Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2040m) and earned sizeable cheques for his connections in both the Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup.
