Dan Excel will have to spend at least two weeks in quarantine in Hong Kong before flying to Australia where he will spend two weeks at the quarantine facility in Eastern Creek before heading to owner David Phillip Boehm’s farm in Sydney and the new stable of trainer John Moore’s brother Gary Moore at Rosehill Gardens.

Racing Victoria International Recruitment Officer Leigh Jordon said that barring any problems or injuries Dan Excel would take his place in the 2014 Cox Plate field and gives the six-year-old an excellent chance of becoming the first international winner of the Australasian Weight-For-Age Championship.

“He’ll kick off training at Rosehill before he gets transferred down here to Melbourne to run in a couple of lead-up races, although the stable haven’t decided which ones they are just yet,” Jordon told Racing Victoria,” Jordon told Racing Victoria.

“So him going into quarantine suggests, barring injury in the lead-up, he’s a definite, which is great.

“It’s good to be able to lock one away as early as this.”

Dan Excel was one of ten horses that was included on the list of Cox Plate Invitees, which offers connections a fully subsidized trip to Australia for the Group 1 event.

Dan Excel’s stablemates Military Attack and Designs On Rome were awarded Cox Plate invitations, but are unlikely to take up the opportunity to run in the race while evergreen French champion Cirrus Des Aigles, Frankel’s brother Noble Mission, Godolphin galloper African Story and Dubai World Cup runner-up Mukhadram are also not expected to make the trip to Australia.

Connections of Japanese superstar Just A Way are reportedly considering a shot at the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (2040m) with the Yasuda Kinen winner, but Jordon remains hopeful that they may come to Australia for the Cox Plate, while the connections of Singapore Airlines International Cup runner-up Smoking Sun are reportedly very interested in running their star galloper in the race.

Dan Excel is currently available at 2014 Cox Plate odds of $17; with Carlton House ($9) a narrow favourite from Silent Achiever ($10), Sacred Falls ($11), Royal Descent ($13), Happy Trails ($15), Boban ($17) and Criterion ($17).
