Upset Cox Plate 2013 Result – Emergency Shamus Award Wins

October 26th, 2013

Original emergency runner for the 2013 Cox Plate, Shamus Award has won the Moonee Valley classic in an upset over Turnbull Stakes champ Happy Trails and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Melbourne Cup hope Fiorente.

The winning Danny O’Brien-trained Snitzel colt entered the history books with their narrow win in the $3 million Group 1 W.S. Cox Plate (2040m) becoming the first ever maiden to take out the weight-for-age feature.

Today was just the three-year-old’s 10th start, Shamus Award not having won a race previously.

And what a race to break their maiden status in.

Making the story that much sweeter was the fact the Cox Plate winner was ridden by an apprentice jockey with young Chad Schofield putting his extraordinary talent on display in a brave all-the-way effort up front.

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet, it’s a fantastic feeling,” Schofield said after their Cox Plate success.

“I wanted to get a Group 1 really badly and what a way to do it in the Cox Plate.”

Shamus Award was quick away from their gun barrier three draw, having only just made the field with Atlantic Jewel’s scratching earlier in the week, and went up to dictate the race.

Upfront is where they stayed too, Shamus Award pulling something out on the straight over the closing stages to pull away from their challengers.

In a blanket Cox Plate finish Shamus Award ($21), who was had as long as $52 in’s incredible double the odds promotion, held on to defeat the Byron Cozamanis-trained Happy Trails by a nose.

Waterhouse’s import Fiorente ($8) was just half a length off the winner in third, running an ideal trial for the $6.2 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) on Tuesday November 5, a race they were runner-up in 12 months ago in their Australian race debut.

Finishing off the Cox Plate first four one a further three quarters of a length away was then the Chris Waller-trained Group 1 winner Foreteller ($21).

While plans for the Cox Plate winner Shamus Award next race are yet to be decided, smart punters will now be heading to to gear up for the next race Australia’s best bookie is offering double the odds on – next Saturday’s Victoria Derby!
