Cox Plate 2013 Odds – It’s A Dundeel Easing Favourite

October 26th, 2013

Odds on the favourite in this afternoon’s Cox Plate 2013 field It’s A Dundeel continue to ease as the punters look elsewhere for value in the weight-for-age classic.

Scheduled as Moonee Valley Race 10 at 5:40pm (AEST) this afternoon, this year’s $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) is shaping up as an intriguing edition, especially after the withdrawal of the hot favourite Atlantic Jewel earlier in the week.

With Mark Kavanagh’s star out of the mix, the injured Atlantic Jewel retired and Europe-bound to begin a new career as a broodmare, it was the only horse to have defeated her on the track It’s A Dundeel the bookies and punters started to back.

The Murray Baker-trained High Chaparral four-year-old was as short as $4 in Cox Plate betting earlier in the week, despite fitness queries as they haven’t raced since their upset over Atlantic Jewel in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield back on September 21.

They’ve since eased right out to $4.50, or $9 for the smart punters backing their Cox Plate selections online at in their exclusive ‘Double The Odds’ (DTO) prices.

Baker is confident his five-time Group 1 winner hasn’t lost too much fitness in the lead-up to the Plate and that they won’t be beaten on fitness, but whether they will have the zip from gate 12 – a barrier that has never produced a Cox Plate winner – is another matter.

#14 Long John ($8.50 into $7) is the 2013 Cox Plate market mover

The other top Cox Plate hopes and their moves in the market are then:

  • #8 Puissance De Lune – $4.20 – $4.60 – $5.50 ($11 DTO): Darren Weir-trained stayer was runner-up to Happy Trails in the Turnbull last time out in a cracking run, due for a win but whether it’s here over the 2040m or in the Melbourne Cup over 3200m next month we’re not sure.
  • #3 Fiorente – $4.60 – $5.50 – $7 ($14 DTO): Gai Waterhouse knew she was onto a good thing with this import when they ran second in the Melbourne Cup last spring in their maiden run down under. This preparation has also been impressive including their Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes win over the Valley mile two back. Last start fourth in the Turnbull was eye catching and over the same distance but at Moonee Valley they should be right in it.
  • #14 Long John – $8.50 – $7.40 – $7 ([link text=”$14 DTO”]): Genuine market mover from the Peter Snowden stables, is a three-year-old so history is against them age-wise and they come off a Caulfield Guineas win with the last to complete that double with the Cox Plate being way back in 1984, still earned a go and the money is coming for them.

Other notable hopes in the latest Cox Plate odds you can lock in at double the fixed win price at then include:

  • #2 Happy Trails ($12 or $24 DTO) – Won the Emirates Stakes last spring, back in the Group 1 winner’s stall with a Turnbull upset over many of these same rivals last start which looks an ideal lead-up
  • #1 Green Moon ($14 or $28 DTO) – Lloyd Williams-owned Melbourne Cup winner from last November, has been hit and miss this prep and has gate 11 to overcome but are better than ninth in Underwood
  • #12 Super Cool ($21 or $42 DTO) – Mark Kavanagh’s remaining Cox hope has gone under the radar somewhat, but is the right age (4YO) and their last start third to Atlantic Jewel in the Caulfield Stakes should have sharpened up this Australian Cup winner who loves the Valley – two from four at the track
  • #15 Shamus Award ($21 or $42 DTO) – Other 3YO in the mix, got in as the sole emergency with Atlantic Jewel’s scratching and comes off a Caulfield Guineas third, probably can’t beat their last start conqueror Long John or a number of these as they are still a maiden but there has been a tickle for them in the markets so could be insider info floating around here
