Cox Plate Field Tips 2013

October 25th, 2013

The race tips all fans are after for this weekend in Melbourne are those on the 2013 Cox Plate field that are facing off as Moonee Valley Race 8 at 5:40pm (AEST) on Saturday, October 26.

Super Cool

There are 14 livewire hopes still in the mix for the $3 million Group 1 W.S. Cox Plate (2040m) this year following the withdrawal of the now retired mare Atlantic Jewel.

Her trainer Mark Kavanagh is still in with a shot at the Cox Plate title however with his Australian Cup winning four-year-old Super Cool looking to become the 27th four-year-old Cox Plate winner – the most of any age group.

Super Cool however is at a generous price of $21, or $42 in’s exclusive Double The Odds offer on the Cox Plate field this weekend, and face some stiff competition.

Cox Plate betting is led by another four-year-old, Murray Baker’s High Chaparral Kiwi-trained stallion It’s A Dundeel ($4.20 or $8.40 DTO).

They haven’t raced since their upset win over Atlantic Jewel in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) however meaning they would have to be the first horse in history to win the Cox Plate off a break longer than 21 days.

While they certainly have the class as a five-time elite level champ there’s a few queries as their Cox Plate campaign was thrown off track after they were found to be suffering from a hoof abscess.

The other major players in Cox Plate betting this year are then the Melbourne Cup-bound duo of Puissance De Lune and Fiorente, both easing out in the markets over the week.

Both also come via the same lead-up race having run second and fourth respectively to Happy Trails, another Cox Plate 2013 hopes, in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington.

2013 Cox Plate Trifecta Tip: #11 It’s A Dundeel ($8.40 DTO) from #2 Happy Trails ($26 DTO) and #12 Super Cool ($42 DTO)

But which, if any, of these should you be backing to win the Cox Plate?

Or is it worth throwing your faith into the younger generation and backing a three-year-old to beat home their older rivals with Peter Snowden’s Caulfield Guineas champ Long John a Cox Plate market mover into $7.50 (or $15 DTO).

2013 Cox Plate Trifecta Tip

#11 It’s A Dundeel ($8.40 DTO) from #2 Happy Trails ($26 DTO) and #12 Super Cool ($42 DTO)

A horse needs to be at their best to win a Cox Plate, and while things haven’t exactly gone to pan for It’s A Dundeel we think they have beaten the clock to be fit for this and are still the one to beat despite missing the Caulfield Stakes and some key lead-up work.

Happy Trails is at a nice price considering their good record over the distance and the fact they beat many of the top chances here home in the Turnbull at a juicy price.

Super Cool adds even more value and cannot be discounted having won two from four over this track and distance. They come through the Caulfield Stakes when third to their star stablemate and will be better without her there and at the Valley where they seem to enjoy the tight track.
