Waterhouse Confident Fiorente Can Top 2013 Cox Plate Field

October 24th, 2013

Trainer Gai Waterhouse believes that Fiorente is more than capable of winning the Group 1 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley this Saturday October 26, 2013.

The five-year-old has performed gallantly in all four of his Australian race starts since arriving from Europe late last year.

Placing third in the Melbourne Cup at his very first run Down Under, Fiorente set the scene for an incredibly successful staying career in the country.

Since then, Fiorente has won the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes this spring racing carnival and produced a close fourth in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes last start.

However, despite his appeal in the 2013 Cox Plate field, Waterhouse believes he has even more of a chance in the $6 million Melbourne Cup on Tuesday November 5, 2013.

“I hope he can finish in the first three (in the Cox Plate),” Waterhouse said.

“I’ve kept him fresh for the race and I’d be disappointed if he couldn’t, but his main goal is the Cup.

“That’s what we bought him for last year and he didn’t do a bad job there.

“Hopefully he can better himself this year.”

Fiorente has won three of his 14 race starts in total and has earned more than $1.35 million in prize money during his horse racing career.
