It’s A Dundeel Tops Odds on Cox Plate 2013 Field

October 23rd, 2013

Following the withdrawal of the since retired favourite Atlantic Jewel, betting markets on the 2013 Cox Plate field are now led by the only horse to defeat the mare over her career, It’s A Dundeel.

Murray Baker’s High Chaparral four-year-old is looking to become the fourth of their age to win the $3. million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) in as many years when they race in the Moonee Valley classic this Saturday.

Prepared in New Zealand, It’s A Dundeel is also looking to go back-to-back in the Cox Plate for the Kiwis following the win by Ocean Park 12 months ago.

Not everything is going It’s A Dundeel’s way ahead of the weekend however.

There are a number of hoodoos they must overcome to salute for the punters as the Cox Plate favourite, the galloper currently paying $4 in Cox Plate betting or $8 at in their exclusive Double The Odds promo!

If successful they will be the first from their barrier (13 into 12) to win the race since 1979, and the first since Fields Of Omagh (2003) to win the Cox Plate third-up from a spell.

They were last seen winning the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) in an upset over Atlantic Jewel last month, and the fact they haven’t raced since due to a hoof abscess means they will also out to become the first Cox Plate winner to come off a break longer than 21 days.

Remember that all the Cox Plate field can be had at double their fixed win price at this weekend, so from here on all odds quoted will be the horse’s juicy DTO price.

The next best in Cox Plate betting following It’s A Dundeel ($8) are then:

  • #8 Puissance De Lune ($8.80 DTO) – Darren Weir’s Shamardal six-year-old, last seen running second in the Turnbull Stakes, has a lovely gate seven (in from eight) draw and is on way to the Melbourne Cup, they have a jockey change too however with Ben Melham to ride for the first time due to the suspension of Glen Boss
  • #3 Fiorente ($9.20 DTO) – Gai Waterhouse-trained import ran second in last year’s Melbourne Cup in their first run down under, has been right in Cox Plate calculations all prep and their Turnbull Stakes fourth confirmed they were getting ready to strike, must overcome the outside barrier however
  • #14 Long John ($18 DTO) – Peter Snowden’s Caulfield Guineas winner earned this with their Group 1 win over the mile last start, need to step up in distance and class and beat the older rivals here like 19 three-year-olds have done before them, the last to take out the Guineas – Plate double however was Red Anchor (1984) so they have some history against them there

Following the top fancies are then some other quality weight-for-age hopes at generous odds including last start Turnbull Stakes winner Happy Trails ($28 DTO), reigning Melbourne Cup champ Green Moon ($34 DTO) and Danny O’Brien’s Caulfield Guineas third-placegetter Shamus Award ($42 DTO) who gained a run due to the scratching of Atlantic Jewel.
