2013 Cox Plate Field & Barriers – Atlantic Jewel Scratched

October 22nd, 2013

This Saturday the Cox Plate 2013 will take centre stage at Moonee Valley Racecourse, a top-class field of 15 final acceptors released for the weight-for-age classic before the shock scratching of hot favourite Atlantic Jewel.

Fourteen of those were guaranteed a start in the capacity field for the $3 million Group 1 Sportingbet Cox Plate (2040m) with the first emergency Shamus Award sweating on a start.

The Danny O’Brien-trained Snitzel colt however has now gained a run in the Cox Plate field due to the withdrawal of Mark Kavanagh’s four-time Group 1 winning mare Atlantic Jewel.

Last seen taking out the Caulfield Stakes by four lengths proving her 2000m form, the five-year-old injured her tendon in track work this morning just hours after connections drew a plumb barrier seven draw for her Cox Plate bid.

Kavanagh will still be represented in the Cox Plate field on the weekend by his Australian Cup winner Super Cool (barrier 13) who was last seen running third in the Caulfield Stakes when outclassed by their star stablemate.

Shamus Award, last seen running third in the Caulfield Guineas, getting a start now means there are two three-year-olds looking to become the first of their age since So You Think (2009) to take out the classic.

The other is the Peter Snowden-trained Caulfield Guineas winner Long John drawn in gate 11 (into 10).

With the racing future of $1.5 million earner Atlantic Jewel now in doubt, the Cox Plate has been opened right up this year without the shortie in the markets.

The new horses to beat are Gai Waterhouse-trained Fiorente, Underwood Stakes champ It’s A Dundeel and Darren Weir’s stayer Puissance De Lune.

The trio is fighting for top spot in Cox Plate betting, all currently installed as the equal $4.20 favourites with the bookies having a hard time separating them.

  • #3 Fiorente (barrier 13) – Melbourne Cup runner-up in their Australian debut last November, has been racing well since especially this time in with a first-up Dato Tan Chin Nam win at the Valley and then a fast finishing fourth to Happy Trails in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 5
  • #8 Puissance De Lune (barrier 7) – One-time favourite for the Melbourne Cup (3200m), this Shamardal six-year-old is a favourite of jockey Glen Boss’s and caught the eye last time out with their Turnbull second, improvement expected on Saturday off of that
  • #11 It’s A Dundeel (barrier 12) – Only horse to date to beat Atlantic Jewel when this Murray Baker-trained New Zealander won Group 1 number five in the Underwood Stakes, missed the Caulfield Stakes rematch however and some key Cox Plate lead-up work due to a hoof abscess but connections are confident they’ve recovered

Other notable hopes in the 2013 Cox Plate field include Turnbull Stakes winner Happy Trails (barrier two) who is now trained by Byron Cozamanis due to the suspension of Paul Beshara and Chris Waller’s Turnbull runner-up Foreteller (barrier eight).

Trainer Robert Hickmott and owner Lloyd Williams meanwhile will saddle-up a three pronged Cox Plate assault this year with reigning Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon, their last start The Metropolitan champ in Sydney Seville and Masked Marvel.

There is also an uncommon international presence in the race this year with two Europeans out to steal the show from the locals with Side Glance on the rails with Craig Williams to ride and the Jane Chapple-Hyam-trained Mull Of Killough in gate four.
