Pre-Cox Plate Field 2013 Odds Update

October 14th, 2013

After winning the $400,000 Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) over the weekend, Mark Kavanagh’s star mare Atlantic Jewel is firming in pre-2013 Cox Plate field odds around the country.

Racing away with her incredible fourth elite level trophy, the Fasnet Rock five-year-olds silenced the critics that said she wasn’t suited to the 2000m with a four length Caulfield Stakes victory.

While the Chris Waller-trained Foreteller was brave in defeat smashing home late from the back of the field for second, they were still a full four lengths off Kavanagh’s flyer.

Now unbeaten over the distance having also won the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes by seven lengths two years ago, Atlantic Jewel looks spot-on for her shot at the $3 million Group 1 Sportingbet Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley Saturday week, October 26.

Kavanagh’s confidence is better than ever before, as is jockey Michael Rodd’s, who both said on Saturday that the Caulfield Stakes romp was the ideal fitness boost for the mare ahead of the big one.

If successful again next start Atlantic Jewel will become the first mare in 71 years to complete the Caulfield Stakes – Cox Plate double.

It’s a hoodoo that hasn’t stopped the bookies winding her price in from $2.80 to $2.30 in the latest Cox Plate betting markets however.

There are then currently three other single figure chances in the Cox Plate odds with:

  • Fiorente ($5) – Gai Waterhouse-trained import was second to Green Moon in the Melbourne Cup in their Australian debut last spring, third in the All Aged Stakes after that in the autumn before coming back here with a sixth to Atlantic Jewel in the Memsie over a too short 1400m, better when winning the Dato over the Moonee Valley mile and their Turnbull fourth was a cracking Cox Plate lead-up
  • It’s A Dundeel ($6) – Murray Baker-trained Kiwi lowered Atlantic Jewel’s flag, the only horse to do so to date, with their upset Underwood victory on September 21 which was the High Chaparral stallion’s fifth Group 1 win, they missed the Caulfield Stakes rematch due to a hoof abscess however and is now fighting to be fit enough for the Cox Plate
  • Puissance De Lune ($9) – Spring cups still on the agenda for this Shamardal grey who was tipped by jockey Glen Boss as the Melbourne Cup winner last spring, last start was a second in the Turnbull and could pick up a Cox Plate start before tacking the longer races

The best of the double figure chances are then a Peter Snowden-trained three-year-old duo.

There’s Fasnet Rock filly Guelph ($16) who is a doubtful Cox Plate acceptor as she runs in the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) this Wednesday and her Caulfield Guineas winning stablemate from the weekend Long John ($16).

The horse that ran second to Atlantic Jewel in last weekend’s Caulfield Stakes, Forteller, meanwhile is rated a $31 outside chance of turning the tables with an upset Cox Plate result should they accept for a rematch.
