Hawkes Confident All Too Hard Can End Hoodoo in 2012 Cox Plate

October 25th, 2012

Team Hawkes is confident that exciting colt All Too Hard can become the first horse to win the Caulfield Guineas/Cox Plate double since Red Anchor in 1984 in the Australasian Weight for Age Championship that will be run at Moonee Valley Racecourse on Saturday.

Wayne Hawkes, who trains the half-brother of Black Caviar with father John and brother Michael, doesn’t believe that winning the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) has had a negative impact on All Too Hard’s Cox Plate chances.

“All Too Hard can’t read a paper so he doesn’t know that [no horse has won the double since 1984],” Wayne Hawkes said.

“Quite often these races are afterthoughts, but this race has never been an afterthought for All Too Hard.”

Hawkes dismissed the assertion that All Too Hard peaked at his last start and pointed to his father’s record with three-year-olds in the Cox Plate as a reason why they had the right to head into the race full of confidence.

“He has won the race (the Caulfield Guineas) that John Hawkes wanted to win with him and John Hawkes has got a pretty good record with three-year-olds in the Cox Plate,” Wayne Hawkes said.

“He nearly did it with Viscount and he did it with Octagonal.

“He actually knows what it takes to win the race with a three-year-old.”

All Too Hard handed superstar colt Pierro his first defeat in the Caulfield Guineas and Hawkes is excited at the prospect of the star duo battling it out again on Saturday.

“He’s untried at 2000 (metres) but it would be great to see him and Pierro at the top of the straight, both having had the perfect run and go head to head. I’d love to be in that position,” he said.

“They’ve both had the perfect run, they’re both there with 200 (metres) to go fighting each other. That would be the pinnacle for me I reckon.”

All Too Hard is currently available at odds of $10 in the 2012 Cox Plate betting market at bookmaker.com.au.
