2012 Cox Plate – Third Acceptances

October 9th, 2012

There were no real surprises when the third acceptances for the 2012 Cox Plate were announced today.

All the leading Cox Plate contenders remain a chance to start in the race that will be run at Moonee Valley Racecourse on October 27.

Superstar three-year-old Pierro was among the acceptors and will have his final Cox Plate lead-up run in the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) this Saturday.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained colt is aiming to become the first horse to win the Caulfield Guineas-Cox Plate double since Red Anchor in 1984.

The son of Lonhro is a $2.60 favourite in the 2012 Cox Plate betting market at bookmaker.com.au.

The Spring Racing Carnival path for Green Moon was finally decided with connections of the stallion deciding to skip the Caulfield Cup in favour of the Cox Plate.

The son of Montjeu proved himself at Group 1 weight for age level by impressively winning the Turnbull Stakes (2000m) on Saturday.

New Zealand galloper Ocean Park remains in the Cox Plate field and will have his final hit out in the Caulfield Stakes (2000m) this Saturday.

The race is expected to be a dress rehearsal for the Cox Plate with Manighar and Sincero also nominated for the race.

Connections of both horses are keen for them to bounce back after disappointing performances in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m).

Three-year-old Proisir remains in Cox Plate contention despite failing to win the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on Saturday.

Connections of Proisir’s Spring Champion Stakes conqueror It’s a Dundeel did not pay the third acceptance fee as the colt will now focus on the Victoria Derby to be run at Flemington Racecourse on November 3.
