Cox Plate Favourite Stars in Moonee Valley Debut

October 2nd, 2012

2012 Cox Plate favourite Pierro made his Moonee Valley debut in emphatic fashion easily winning the Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) on Friday night.

The undefeated colt put to bed any doubts he wouldn’t handle the Moonee Valley track by destroying the small field by four and three quarter lengths.

Jockey Nash Rawiller praised the maturity of the three-year-old who now has eight wins from eight career starts.

“He’s such an adaptable horse, he took the first turn like he’d been around it 100 times and that’s just what makes him as good as he is, he just adapts to situations,” Rawiller said.

“He’s going on to better things so he needed this tonight. I wanted to be as soft as possible but still make him get the job done and get a bit of improvement out of it.”

Gai Waterhouse was delighted with the superstar colt’s effort and believes the race was the perfect preparation for the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and Cox Plate (2040m).

“It’s fantastic, he’s such an exciting colt…it was just a galloping lesson,” Waterhouse said.

“It was lovely the way he lowered himself and found the line and his acceleration at the end of the race that was the best thing.

“He’s really exciting and you were very privileged to see a colt as good as this.”

Pierro burst on to the Australian racing scene as a two-year-old winning the Silver Slipper (1100m), Todman Slipper (1200m), Golden Slipper (1200m), Sires Produce (1400m) and Champagne Stakes (1600m).

He returned to the races this spring with an easy victory in the Group 3 Run to the Rose (1200m) over Your Song and eventual Golden Rose winner Epaulette.

If Pierro is successful in his Spring Carnival mission he will become the first horse to win the Golden Slipper-Cox Plate double as well as the first horse to achieve the Caulfield Guineas-Cox Plate double since Red Anchor in 1984.

He is currently the favourite in both the 2012 Caulfield Guineas and 2012 Cox Plate betting markets at bookmaker.com.au.
