2012 Cox Plate – Second Acceptances

September 25th, 2012

There are forty-two entries left in the 2012 Cox Plate field after second acceptances were taken today.

The list of second acceptors includes the Alain de Royer Dupre-trained duo of Americain and Shahwardi as well as the Luca Cumani-trained Afsare.

Paolini was the last European-trained horse to run in the Cox Plate and finished tenth behind Savabeel in 2010.

Afsare is considered the best chance, of the international raiders, to run in the 2012 Cox Plate and is currently priced at $41 at bookmaker.com.au.

Current 2012 Cox Plate favourite Pierro headed a strong list of three-year-olds who remain in the running to qualify for the field.

The undefeated colt is joined by stablemate Proisir, Gloaming Stakes winner It’s A Dundeel, Golden Rose winner Epaulette, Underwood Stakes flop All Too Hard, Danny O’Brien-trained Shamexpress and 1000 Guineas favourite Commanding Jewel.

Lloyd Williams has paid up for five horses with Efficient, Green Moon, Mourayan, Midas Touch and Seville all among the second acceptors.

A decision on whether Green Moon runs in the Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate will be made after the Turnbull Stakes that will be run on October 6.

Leading Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse also has five horses left in Cox Plate contention.

Pierro and Proisir are joined by champion mare More Joyous, Newcastle Cup winner Glencadam Gold and Irish import Julienas.

Leading Melbourne trainer Peter Moody paid up for Moment of Change and Manighar, with the Linamix grey drifting in 2012 Cox Plate betting markets after his disappointing performance in the Underwood Stakes.

2011 Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed was another second acceptor despite trainer Leon Macdonald saying earlier in the week that the Cox Plate was off the mare’s agenda and she would instead defend her Caulfield Cup title.

George Main Stakes winner Shoot Out and Underwood Stakes winner Ocean Park remain entered in the race after their impressive victories on Saturday.

Shoot Out finished fourth behind So You Think in the 2010 Cox Plate while four-year-old Ocean Park will be making his Cox Plate debut.

Glass Harmonium, Rekindled Interest, Secret Admirer and Sincero are all still a chance to have another crack at the Cox Plate.

You can bet on the 2012 Cox Plate when the market reopens shortly at bookmaker.com.au.
