2010 Cox Plate Field

October 19th, 2010

The 2010 Cox Plate field came out this morning, with a relatively small field of 10 horses running the race.

Despite the 2010 Cox Plate field being quite small, it still looks to be a very competitive field, despite the early payouts on So You Think by Ladbrokes.com.au. A lot of previously expected entrants are missing, however, including Herculian Prince and Metal Bender.

So You Think will certainly be the favourite once the early odds are released, and he is placed well in barrier 5. He will be carrying a middle weight with 57.5kg as well, so this should be no disadvantage for him. His incredible Group 1 Yalumba Stakes (2000m) win points to what will likely be a very dominant Cox Plate performance.

An interesting entry in the Cox Plate field is Luen Yat Forever, a legend at the Macau Racecourse but so far not much of a name here. His first Australian run in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap was very impressive, though, as he finished fourth just barely behind Poor Judge in third and only about a length behind the unstoppable More Joyous. Nevertheless, a bet on him could be risky even with a barrier 2 start, as he has not run a race beyond 1800 metres.

More Joyous is the most likely upset in this race, starting from barrier 3 with bottom weight of 55.5kg and still on a win streak after 8 races. If it weren’t for her lack of experience beyond the 1600 metre mark, she would look good to keep up her winning ways. As it stands, it will be very surprising if she doesn’t place, but a win over So You Think will take a uniquely valiant effort.

Zipping is another one to watch in this race, one of the most experienced runners in the Cox Plate field at 2000 metres and beyond. Despite his advanced age for a race horse, Zipping is still in fine form with a recent win in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) and a win earlier this year in the Group 1 Australia Cup (2000m). He has also placed in the past two Cox Plates despite having run a worse season beforehand. If Zipping really is on top form, then he is sure to give So You Think a very competitive run despite top weight at 59kg and a barrier 6 draw.
