89 Horses can still make 2010 Cox Plate Field after First Declarations

September 8th, 2010

On Tuesday the first declarations for the 2010 Cox Plate were taken with the number of horses still in contention of making the Cox Plate field narrowed down to 89.

The $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) is due to take place at Moonee Valley Racecourse on Saturday October 23 and the connections of 89 horses paid the first declaration fee to keep their weight-for-age hopefuls on the Cox Plate path.

When nominations were taken 186 horses were entered for the 2010 Cox Plate, with notable absentees at the first declaration stage including 2007 Melbourne Cup winner Efficient also due to miss the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups after ongoing injury issues, and WATC Derby winner Chartreux.

Only one internationally-trained horse remains in contention for the Cox Plate, Luen Yat Forever from Macau with overseas stars including the Luca Cumani-trained Becqu Adoree not continuing.

Early favourites for the 2010 Cox Plate at Ladbrokes.com.au still in contention include recently crowned Horse of the Year Typhoon Tracy, defending champ So You Think, last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Shocking, Chris Waller’s Metal Bender and Whobegotyou.

The 2010 Melbourne Cup first declarations were also released yesterday leaving 151 horses fighting for a spot in the field, as were those for the 2010 Caulfield Guineas (October 9), 2010 Thousand Guineas (October 13) and 2010 Caulfield Cup (October 16).

Second declarations for the 2010 Cox Plate will be taken on September 21.
