2010 Cox Plate Programme & Preview

July 28th, 2010

This year’s Melbourne Spring Carnival is shaping up to be a beauty, with a number of stunning gallopers emerging after the autumn ready to take out the showcase races on the Australian racing calendar.

One of the premier events sure to attract a quality final field and plenty of exciting betting action is the time-honoured Cox Plate.

The 2010 Cox Plate is worth over $3 million in prizemoney plus $50,000 in trophies and is scheduled to take place on Saturday October 23 at the scenic Moonee Valley Racecourse.

Already a number of exciting contenders are in preparations for a run in the 2010 Cox Plate including last year’s Melbourne Cup winner Shocking.

The Mark Kavanagh-trained son of Street Cry was the surprise winner of the esteemed Melbourne Cup last year and has been nominated for both the Cox Plate and the Melbourne Cup this season.

Shocking had a dismal autumn campaign, a hoof abscess marring his performances in both the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) and the Group 2 St George Stakes (1800m) as he finished eighth and sixth respectively, before being spelled in preparation for the spring.

Other stars with the Cox Plate on the cards include the Gai Waterhouse’s five-time Group 1 winner Theseo, Peter Moody’s champion mare Typhoon Tracy who is up for the Australian Racehorse of the Year honours, and John Wallace’s promising AJC Derby winner Shoot Out.

Cox Plate Day is the premier race meeting held at Moonee Valley each year and features an incredible six other Group races including the $250,000 Group 2 Moonee Valley Cup (2500m) and the $300,000 Group 2 Schweppes Stakes (1200m).

Nominations for the 2010 Cox Plate close on Tuesday August 3, the same day as the 2010 Melbourne Cup nominations are announced.

Following the nominations, the Cox Plate final field of acceptances will be announced on October 19 and we will be the first to publish the final field and form of the 2010 Cox Plate runners.
